Once Again, the UN Declares: The Economic Blockade Against the Cuban People Must End Now!

The United Nations has repeatedly called on our country to end this blockade. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted Resolution 47/19 on the necessity of ending the economic embargo on Cuba imposed by the United States. For 32 years, the UN has voted on this issue. Every year Washington has said, “It’s a non-binding resolution!” and continued on with the blockade.

The 2024 UN press release mentions that Cuba has lost over $250 trillion in the last 18 years because of the blockade and that this loss is a “systemic violation of human rights.” The American delegate explained his vote against ending the blockade stating, “The United States stands with the Cuban people”.

For many years Cuban agricultural products were exported to the United States. Tobacco, Sugar, and Rum were most notable, but Americans enjoyed Cuban fruits and vegetables, drank their coffee, ate their rice, and enjoyed their beef and dairy products for decades. American businesses operated in Cuba.

During the American prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s and early 30s, the Cuban nightlife scene thrived. Cuban bars, nightclubs, casinos, and hotels thrived during this era from American tourists. Luxury hotels such as the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the Havana Riviera, and the Biltmore Hotel were built, and tourists flocked to Cuban beaches, resorts, and social attractions. Cuba became known as the “Playground of the Americas.”

In 1959, Cuba began nationalizing American businesses. In retaliation, the United States placed a partial embargo on Cuba in 1960, and a full blockade was implemented in 1961. This blockade has been in place since then.

The American Peace Information Center stands with the demand of the Cuban people, which is for the end of the 64-year long economic blockade on Cuba.
